National Awards for Teachers 2022: Deoria teacher’s effort to inculcate scientific temper recognised

Khursheed Ahmad, 36, a teacher of Composite School in Sahawa area in district Deoria, UP, has been selected for the National Awards for Teachers 2022. He is the only teacher from UP who has been selected from the state out of 46 others across the country on the list of awardees.

Ahmad believes that he has been selected for the award for inculcating scientific temper among students in a way that brought smiles to their faces and made them feel happy.

He said, “In my class, I never called students by their names or roll numbers. I have given names like nitrogen, hydrogen, lithium and in some cases names of prominent scientists. In this way, I constantly push them towards science and scientists.”

“Even after class, students call themselves by that name as they find the concept interesting. It is my responsibility to remove fear of science subjects from their hearts and minds and encourage them to make a career in science as it holds the key to the country’s development,” he said.

Ahmad even assigned simple projects on science experiments by dividing students in small groups. He first explained the idea to them with a mobile or a laptop, to make the subject interesting, and then asked students to repeat it with their peers.

Often, competitive events were organised in class to draw his students’ interest in science. “I am fostering a culture of innovation and creative thinking. Students are required to come up with original technological ideas and innovations to solve everyday problems,” he said.

In 2020 and 2021, when physical classes came to a halt, Ahmad took an initiative and rolled out Mohallah classes, where he used to call students in small groups at different locations and continued physical teaching alongside virtual classes.

He also roped in past pupils of the school and entrusted them the responsibility to teach junior students. “It helped a lot as the learning outcome of students of our school was better than many other schools in the vicinity,” he said.

Ahmad, who took up teaching in 2006, worked as Shiksha Mitra for four years till he was appointed assistant teacher in 2010. “This journey from Shiksha Mitra to national awardee has been very satisfying,” he said. Ahmad has already received the state award in 2019.

He first worked as assistant teacher in a primary school in Deoria and then in 2015, he was selected as junior science teacher in Mathura. Three years later, he was sent to a Deoria school.

The awards’ ceremony is scheduled to be held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on September 5. The award carries a certificate of merit, a cash award of 50,000 and a silver medal, according to a letter issued by the ministry of education, government of India.
